My 10-year-old child loves to have tomato sauce during his mealtime. Is processed tomato sauce bad for my child’s health?
Processed tomato sauce, also known as ketchup, comes with abundant health benefits due to its core ingredient, tomatoes. Tomatoes are an extremely healthy fruit that comes with lycopene, an antioxidant, which makes the tomatoes red in colour. Lycopene has been proven to be effective in reducing the risk of cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis as well as helping infertile men to increase their sperm count.
When tomatoes are processed to make ketchup, the cells, which contain lycopene, are split to allow the healthy chemical to be released. As proven in medical studies, lycopene is more readily absorbed by the body when it comes from processed tomatoes.
However, you should take note that a high content of sugar may be present in ketchup, as the same case with many other processed foods we eat, from meat to orange juice. Overconsumption of sugar may cause hormonal surges, leading to insulin resistance, weight gain and obesity.
